Speed: The normal operating speed range for high-speed handpieces is between 200,000 and 400,000 revolutions per minute (RPM). Because of the fast rotational speed, tooth structure may be cut precisely and effectively, minimizing patient discomfort and shortening treatment times.
Turbine: The rotational power of the handpiece is produced by its turbine. Depending on the type of handpiece, either compressed air or electricity are usually used to power it. The turbine is built to endure the high speeds and provide reliable operation.
Water Spray: An integrated water spray system is a common feature of dental handpieces. In order to maintain a clean working field, lower heat generation, cool the tooth being worked on, and prevent the spread of debris and aerosols, water is sprayed through the handpiece during the procedure.
